are just a few of the titles used to describe AOCFEST feature artist Andwele Gardner. Hailing from the legendary music mecca of Detroit the singer known simply as Dwele, started writing songs when he was 10 years old. Shaped by the soulful music delivered from Motown legends such as Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, Dwele's style articulates the smooth and confident sound of contemporary adult R&B music
A multi-instrumentalist, Dwele briefly spent a year studying music at Wayne State before opting to take a more informal approach to perfecting his musical gifts, recording a demo in his bedroom, and later selling The Rize out of the trunk of his car.
Initially, Dwele began his career as a rapper in the ‘90s, before later transitioning into the soul artist we know and love today. Delivering hit album after album, he provides listeners with nothing but great music with an added sophisticated approach. Nominated for multiple Grammy Awards, Dwele has collaborated on several chart topping hits with artists such as Kanye West, Common, Drake, and Slum Village just to name a few.
“I usually draw inspiration from the things that I’m going through when it comes to writing, the things that I see my people going through, I kinda write about that. Musically, I can draw inspiration from everything from the weather outside to what’s on TV before I decide to go into the studio. It comes from all over the place really,” Dwele once said in an interview with you know I got soul.
His fifth and most recent studio album, Greater Than One, was released in 2012 and covers a subject most people can relate to: relationships – the ups, downs and everything in between. We’re delighted to present such a compelling artist to our Art of Cool Festival family!
You can catch Dwele Saturday September 29th at Motorco Music Hall in Durham, NC. See him with either a One-Day Saturday Pass or Weekend Pass. General Admission and VIP options are still available, but act quickly before they are gone. For details on the full festival lineup, hotels, and to purchase your tickets click here.
